It is a rather unusual location for this kind of competition, the only stop on the tour where athletes dive from a private terrace and the springboards are accessible exclusively from the living room of a lucky resident of Polignano. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series follows the traditional format of high diving, a mix of rules taken from the Red Bull Cliff Diving Committee, FINA, and HDA. The competition takes place over two days, 2 rounds each, between the women's and men's competitions and a training day before the competition. The women's competition features six permanent athletes and two wildcards, for a total of eight professionals who compete in four dives from a height of 21 meters, two mandatory, with a maximum degree of difficulty of 2.6, and two optional, with the degree of difficulty established according to the DD formula 2017. For the men's competition, fourteen athletes perform, ten permanent and four wildcards. The competition, always divided into four rounds, requires the execution of two mandatory dives from a height of 27 meters, with a maximum degree of difficulty of 2.8 for the first and 3.6 for the second, and two optional dives with a degree of difficulty established according to the DD formula 2017. For both competitions, the athletes are judged by five judges. The winner of each stage will be the athlete with the highest score and each diver will be awarded points based on their ranking position in each competition, so the winner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series will be the athlete with the highest score among the six stages.
